A selection of old photographs and postcards of Hildenborough
The above picture shows London Road/Tonbridge Road looking north, between the Hilden Manor and the BP garage by Hilden Park Road. The house on the far left with the fancy brickwork is Keith Villas.
Mill Lane, postmarked 1906. This one WAS a bit of a mystery. This appears to be the junction of Mill Lane with London Road, with the Mill in the background. The scene looks drastically different today, the house in the middle of the picture looks a bit like Mill Place, the roof is the same today but that's where the similarity ends. Mill House, on the left, looks very different today, and Mill Gate, which today is to the right of the picture hasn't even been built yet. The postbox has been relocated to the other side of the road.
We were then contacted by Lesley Tidd (née Walker) who says:-
I can confirm that your picture on the website is indeed Mill Lane because I lived in the house in the foreground from 1946 until 1963 when I married. It was then known as Mill Cottage. I always believed (rightly or wrongly) that our abode was the miller's cottage and Mill House was where the mill owner lived. I particularly recognise the front door porch with its columns. I thought this was rather ostentatious for a small cottage, but it's still there now. My stepfather was the proprietor of Mill Garage (not yet built in the photograph).
We were then contacted by Judith Sharpe (née Glaisher) who adds:
I can confirm that the building on the left is El Molino/now Mill Place. Just beyond it, to the left, is the oldest part of Mill House which is set back. The main part of Mill House joined onto the oldest bit but has clearly not been built/added in this photo.
The building on the right is definitely Mill Cottage/now Mill Gate. Both Mill Gate and Mill Place still have those covered 'porches' with pillars.
I knew Lesley who confirmed that the building on the right was Mill Cottage as we lived next door to her. Until around 1969 Mill House/El Molino was one big house. She lived at Mill Cottage with her stepfather (?) Bob and mother Doris Payne. I knew Lesley when I was a child and often popped over to see her parents who were very kind to me.
